The new Dietary Guidelines re- commend that Americans consume a variety of colorful, nutrient-rich products throughout the day, with a diet focused on “real whole foods.” “Scientific evidence consistent- ly shows that fruits and vegetables should make up the majority of what people eat,” said Mollie Van Lieu, IFPA’s vice president of nutrition and health. “The Administration’s focus on whole foods is an opportunity to increase fruit and vegetable con- sumption, as they are the most nu- trient-dense foods available.” For a 2,000-calorie daily plan, the guidelines suggest three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit, distinguishing between naturally occurring sugars in fruits and added sugars. IFPA also appreciated the guideli- nes’ focus on reducing added sugars and highly processed foods, which often replace healthier options such as fruits and vegetables.
